WANECK, John William, "Jack", 81, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2017. Beloved husband of the late Joan Waneck. Devoted father of Cindy Waneck. Born in Hoboken, NJ, to loving parents William and Edna (Merkins) and raised in West New York, NJ. He lived in Westwood, NJ for over 55 years and was also a long-time summer resident on Long Beach Island, NJ with a home in Holgate that he and Joan loved and lived with their good friends. WANECK, John William, "Jack", 81, passed away on Thursday, May 11, 2017. Beloved husband of the late Joan Waneck. Devoted father of Cindy Waneck. Born in Hoboken, NJ, to loving parents William and Edna (Merkins) and raised in West New York, NJ. He lived in Westwood, NJ for over 55 years and was also a long-time summer resident on Long Beach Island, NJ with a home in Holgate that he and Joan loved and lived with their good friends. Jack served in the US Naval Reserve. Jack graduated from Jersey City Teacher's College where he met wife, Joan and he later received his Masters at Fairleigh Dickinson University where he graduated as the only class member with Summa Cum Laude honors. After graduation, Jack taught with Joan at Stony Lane Elementary School in Paramus and later on Paramus HS where he taught Social Studies. Jack served as the Social Studies Department Chairman at Ridgewood HS where he brought anthropology, psychology and multiculturalist offerings to the courses offered. Jack retired in 1995 after 36 years of teaching and enjoyed time with Joan traveling the East Coast. Jack was also an accomplished artist. He painted, sculpted, carved wood, and taught students how to paint. Jack has been described as "a man for all seasons", a "true renaissance man" and in a photo, "two Jacks and a Joker".

Jack was a member of Grace Episcopal Church where he had also served on the Vestry. He was an avid champion of animals. A celebration of Jack's life will be at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd., Westwood, on Wednesday from 2-7 PM. And celebration of Jack's faith will be held on Thursday,11:00 am at Grace Episcopal Church.
